Douglas | An apartment reimagined by Sannah & Co.

Set within a low-rise coastal apartment block dating to the late 1980s, this brief was resolved through decoration & capitalising on existing building features. The intent was to maximise natural light, expand the scale of the usable space, create indoor / outdoor continuity, & source locally.

Accessibility requirements were fixed, & the design worked around these key elements to achieve the desired aesthetic. Glass brick became the key device to draw borrowed light into rooms, while tempering the exposed frontage with a warmer material register throughout. Removing the existing carpets revealed a rich concrete aggregate, subsequently polished to densify the surface & natural variation. Rendered walls form a textural canvas for disciplined materials - spotted gum, Japanese Inax tiles (Artedomus), and Cosh Living furniture. 

Art was supplied by Australian artists, Emma Pratt & Dylan Jones, whose palette & touch suit the refined language of the home & surrounding environment. Art is where the house really becomes the home.

The plan centres around a handmade custom dining table, designed by Sannah & Co & built by Henry Anderson - its form a reference to the building's own facade. The table functions as a modular element (at 900mm high) - fusing the function of an island bench & the form of a beautiful dining setting. Chairs move modularly between the dining setting, the kitchen bench & the outdoor terrace, giving this home a sense of leisurely freedom.

The same attitude carries through the rest of the apartment. Curtains are used as sectional dividers, rather than doors, unlocking spatial capital. Glass brick returns in both bathrooms, expanding their apparent volume. 

What's left is the feeling - calm, decisive & unique. A space to bring people together; to dine; to converse; to love.
